Jul. 12, 2022 What Are LEED Points and Why Are They Important?

What are LEED points, and how can my playground surfacing project qualify?

LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a green building rating system which creates a standard for the design and construction of environmentally friendly projects. LEED points are earned through a third-party certification program in conjunction with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) www.usgbc.org. Your playground can qualify by using materials and practices that are accepted as a green building project.

Why is LEED and building green important when planning my playground?

The benefits of building green can include improved air and water quality, and the reduction of landfill waste by using regional materials and the use of pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content.

“Every single human being on the planet should have safe and healthy places to live, work, learn and play. Leading long and healthy lives is not a privilege—it’s a right for everyone. Shouldn’t the places where we spend 90% of our time support our health and wellbeing? Improved health and productivity benefits are playing a larger role than ever before in driving companies to invest in green building.” (Better buildings equal better lives. (n.d.). Usgbc.Org. How can LEED aid in my choices while choosing playground surfacing?

The products you choose as playground surfacing are not LEED certified in themselves but are used to help a project qualify under the LEED rating system. Visit https://www.usgbc.org/leed  to learn more about their rating system. Both Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) and unitary surfacing, such as Poured-in-Place (PIP) playground surface, products can be chosen to qualify under the LEED rating system. You can earn up to 14 LEED points on your next project.

By reducing the environmental impact, conservation of natural resources and the use of recycled materials, Fibar products help meet the goals of LEED and can help make your next project a green one.
